My spinal cord - the facts

Your spinal cord is part of the nervous system, it connects your brain to your body.

Your nervous system is made up of two parts:

  • central nervous system (CNS) - your brain and spinal cord belong to this system
  • peripheral nervous system (PNS) - your spinal and autonomic nerves belong to this system

What is my nervous system?

Your nervous system is made up of millions of neurons (nerve cells) combining together. Neurons communicate with each to transmit messages between the body and the brain. These could be sensory messages such as from the skin to the brain or motor messages such as from brain to muscles to make them move.

What is my spinal cord?

Your spinal cord is a collection of millions of neurons. It is approximately 42-45cm long and 1-2cm wide. It is protected by your spinal column.

Your spinal cord begins at the base of your brain, high in your neck, level with your first cervical vertebra. It terminates between your first and second lumbar vertebrae, low in your back. The bottom end of your spinal cord is referred to as the conus medullaris.
